Suárez receives ovation, Alves roundly booed in Camp Nou

FC Barcelona saw in the new season shortly before kick-off in Camp Nou, where León provided the opposition in the 49th Trofeo Joan Gamper. A choir sang the Barcelona anthem before the players and coaching staff took to the field to offer a few words to the Camp Nou faithful.

First up was club captain Xavi Hernández: "Good evening everyone. Firstly, I'd like to thank all those people who have left us this season and who spent many years at the club: Txema Corbella, Victor Valdés and Carles Puyol. Secondly, I would like to welcome the new signings, the new manager and his technical staff. I wish them all the luck in the world. Finally, to tell you than we will give everything, we will put our heart and soul into achieving success this season. Visca Barcelona and Visca Catalonia," said the club captain.

Luis Enrique, the incoming manager, opened with a joke: "Don't worry, all of us wearing blue [the coaching staff] are here to help, we won't be playing. It is a real pleasure to be here, to step onto the pitch in this incredible place. It is indescribable. This group of players is different, unique. They will need your help when they are having a bad day, when things are not going as we would like, that is when we will need you the most. Our main goal is that at the end of the season you are proud of our effort and our work. And we will fight for that. Visca Barça and Visca Catalonia," the former Spain midfielder told the crowd.

When the players were presented Luis Suárez received a standing ovation as he took to the pitch for the first time. When he came on a substitute in the second half, the crowd again erupted in expectation, even though Suárez faces a ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup, which will prevent him from competitive action until late October. Neymar and Messi were also received warmly but Brazilian defender Dani Alves was greeted by boos when he was presented to the fans.
