The most important night of Gibraltar’s short footballing history so far last night was a bitter sweet affair. Their decent performance in the first half (0-1), was ruined by the six goals they conceded after the break, leaving them with a seven goal defeat on their official competitive debut.
With just two professionals in their ranks (Wiseman and Walker) the first 45 from the Gibraltarians was commendable. They made up for their lack of technical ability with diciplined tactial organisation and the Polish visitors had few chances.
However, Gibraltar ran out of steam in the second half, their system fell to pieces and Poland imposed, brutally, their technical and physical superiority. Despite several saves from Jordan Perez, who works as a fireman when not in goal for Gibraltar, Lewandowski (four) and Grosicki (two) put the tie to bed and their side at the top of qualifying group D. Szukala got the other goal.
Gibraltar return to the rock to lick their wounds and continue the learning process.
