Valencia discovered overnight that Radamel Falcao was en route to Manchester, but to Old Trafford instead of the Emirates. Had Manchester City won the race for the Colombian's signature the door would have been left ajar for Álvaro Negredo to leave the club. Still, the Mestalla board remains hopeful that a deal can be pushed through to bring the striker back to La Liga before the window closes at 12pm tonight.
City had made the signing of Falcao a prerequisite for letting Negredo leave in negotiations on Sunday, but Manchester United pipped their neighbours to the post. Now Valencia are attempting to renegotiate a deal for the former Rayo, Real Madrid, Almería and Sevilla forward. City manager Manuel Pellegrini has suggested that Negredo, who is out injured until October, may be the sacrificial player on the altar of Uefa's sanction limiting his squad to 16-non English or academy graduate players for the 2014-15 Champions League.
