Carmen Zarraonandia, daughter of ex-Athletic player Telmo Zarraonandia ‘Zarra’, spoke on Catalunya Radio about Barcelona’s Leo Messi, who is two goals away from equalling her father’s all time Liga goal-scoring record of 251: “My father would have been happy for Messi to beat his record. In our house we love Athletic, but I’m sure my father would have liked Messi, because he seems like a noble person, both on and off the pitch. His behaviour is laudable”.
As to the emotions about her father’s record being broken Zarra’s daughter said “It doesn’t make us angry. Not at all. The record is there to be beaten. My father stopped playing in 53-54. Since then nearly 60 years have passed. Now is the time for someone to beat it”.
She was also asked about her preference between Messi and Ronaldo: “No doubt about it, I like Messi more as a player and a person, without saying anymore. I won’t say anymore. I prefer how he behaves on the pitch and off it. I watch Messi and I like to follow him. Cristiano attacks the goal well, he’s strong and fearsome, but for me, I prefer Leo”.
