"What could happen to Uche? He has a year left on his contract..." Villarreal president Fernando Roig's call to the Professional Football League was a worried one. In the face of possible consequences for the players implicated in the investigation into alleged match-fixing surrounding a Levante-Zaragoza match in 2011 – which may run to bans of up to six years – Roig was one of several presidents considering the wisdom of renewing those players' contracts. Uche's contract expires next summer.
As well as Roig, Levante president Quico Catalán is also keeping a close eye on developments. Two of his players, Juanfran and Héctor Rodas, have given evidence in court as part of the investigation and remain on the books at the Ciutat de Valencia. Both have contracts that run until June 2015 and Levante may decide to shelve talks until the case is resolved.
A singular case is that of Ander Herrera. Although he has not been called to testify, the Manchester United midfielder is also under the prosecutor's gaze and Herrera, at Zaragoza at the time of the suspected fixture, may yet be added to any law suit. United paid 36 million euros for the player, whose contract runs until 2019. His involvement in the match has produced headlines in the British tabloids this week, as has that of Swansea midfielder Jefferson Montero.
Among the rest of the players who may be affected by the fallout are several with lengthy contracts. Vicente Iborra, now at Sevilla, is under contract until 2018 and Atlético captain Gabi, who gave evidence earlier in the week, is tied to the Calderón until 2017. Felipe Caicedo, the Espanyol forward who was at Levante at the time, has a contract until 2016.
