Messi equals Raúl’s record of 71 Champions League goals

Lionel Messi achieved what Cristiano Ronaldo could do not against Liverpool on Tuesday – he equalled Raúl’s Champions League tally of 71 goals and is now the joint-highest goalscorer in the history of the competition. With two strikes against Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA, he drew level with the former Madrid hitman, who recently signed for the New York Cosmos. Messi needed only 90 matches to reach that tally, with an average of 0.78 goals per game, while Raúl struck 71 goals in 142 outings.

Having tied the Champions League record, Messi, 27, has another in his sights, and that’s drawing level with Telmo Zarra as La Liga’s all-time leading goalscorer. He is just one goal away from matching the Athletic Club legend’s tally of 251 goals. The Argentinian has netted seven times in La Liga this term, with a further four in the Champions League, tallying 11 in all competitions (Cristiano has already struck 22 times).

Messi was unable to equal Zarra’s record in the Clásico against Madrid (he is the highest goalscorer in the history of the Clásico with 21 goals in 29 matches). Nor was he able to do so at the Camp Nou against Celta. He will look to do so on Saturday against Almería at the Estadio Juegos Mediterráneo.

Messi is already the highest goalscorer in Barcelona’s history. He achieved this last season in a match against Osasuna, when he levelled and then bettered previous record-holder Paulino Alcántara’s tally. Messi has scored 364 goals in 438 matches for the Camp Nou club.
