I agree that it’s not ideal for Platini, given the job he holds, to get involved in Ballon d’Or predictions, because it can sound like pressure. And in any case he’s revealing his preferences when he should keep them to himself. But I still think that for Madrid to respond with a stern statement to his comments is somewhat over the top. It seems a bit forced to me. There was a time when Cristiano complained that the club didn’t fight his corner (or put pressure on) in these matters as much as Barcelona did for Messi. Yesterday’s note gave me the impression that Madrid feel they should say sorry for something.
More controversy for the Ballon d’Or in any event, a competition that gets more attention as the years go by. Not long ago the debate over who might win tended to happen the day the trophy was announced, maybe in the week before. Now we’re talking about it for several months beforehand. Particularly in Spain, where we have the Cristiano-Messi battle (and long may it continue), but it can be seen that it’s not just here. Last year there were several months of comment about Ribéry. This year the talk is of the Germans, all World Cup winners, as were, as we remember all too well here, the Spaniards four years ago. And none of them won it.
Anyway, the votes had to be in by 21 November. The debates are out of time, but they’re continuing and will continue. From Barcelona there are complaints that the deadline was just before Messi’s brilliant double record, which could have had an influence, with a reminder that last year the voting period was extended, and thanks to that Cristiano’s heroics in Sweden were taken into account. Yesterday, Mathieu wondered why Barcelona hadn’t come out in defence of Messi, like Madrid has done for Cristiano. Madrid’s statement served that purpose, leaving Barcelona figuratively ‘off-side’, and making it look like they don’t believe Messi can win it this year.
