On Tuesday, the Spanish national team will host world champions Germany in their eighth match in Vigo, a city where they have never lost, having recorded four wins and three draws in seven matches.
The last time La Roja visited Vigo was 15 years ago, when a team managed by José Antonio Camacho and containing footballers such as Luis Enrique, Guardiola and Raúl drew 0-0 against Brazil, who fielded Cafú, Rivaldo and Roberto Carlos, among others.
One year before, on 25 March 1998, Spain thrashed Sweden thanks to two goals from Morientes and one each from Raúl and Exteberria in their last friendly fixture before Javier Clemente’s men headed to France for the World Cup.
In 1994, also as preparation for a World Cup, which was held in the USA that year, Spain hosted Portugal at Balaídos. Julio Salinas and Juanele both netted for the hosts, but López and Océano scored to deny Spain the win.
Portugal have played Spain more times than any other side in Vigo, having travelled to the city in 1933 and 1979 for two friendlies. In the first fixture Spain won 3-0, but they drew 1-1 46 years later.
In 1980, the Spanish team, who have never played a competitive fixture in Vigo, contested a friendly against Holland, who were defeated thanks to a solitary strike from Dani in the 82nd minute.
And La Roja’s first visit to the Galician city was in 1926, when the team was spearheaded by Errazquin, who scored twice in a 4-2 win against Hungary.
