Villarreal complicated their chances of making the next round of the Europa League after a Jekyll and Hyde performance against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the penultimate group game at El Madrigal. For moments, Marcelino’s showed stunning brilliance but then undid all of their hard work themselves by gifting their guests. Luciano Vietto showed a subtle touch to tuck in the opener with 25 minutes gone but the German visitors rallied and were level after the break. Sergio Asenjo made contact with a fierce Raffael strike from outside the area but couldn’t stop it from entering to level the scores up nine minutes into the second half.
The home fans were in raptures just moments later when Denis Cheryshev blasted the ‘Submarine’ back in front with a confident strike on 63 minutes. But Borussia began to step up the pressure on the hosts and were back level four minutes later when Xhaka unleashed a stinging direct free-kick which left Asenjo’s crossbar trembling as it entered. Marcelino’s men go into the final group game second in the standings on eight points but require a win away at Apollon on 11 December to be absolutely certain of their place in the Last 32.
