Jose Mourinho sent out a thinly-veiled message for Carlo Ancelotti during his most recent pre-match press conference regarding the Italian’s comments after his team were knocked out of the Cup by cross city rivals Atletico.
“The other day a huge club was knocked out of the Cup and the manager said ‘it’s a good thing, it’s perfect for us. Now we can concentrate on other competitions.’ If my team loses to Bradford I wouldn’t say that. I’d say that it’s tragedy,” said the Portuguese coach without actually calling Ancelotti out by name.
He didn’t let up. “It’s a completely different mindset. I’d rather we have great challenges put in front of us, have to play many games and run the risk of losing everything. It’s a risk but you can’t pick and choose what games you play. I can’t choose the competition.
“I couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t know how to look at my players in the eye or how to explain to the fans that it’s ‘not a competition we want to win.’ We always want to win. If we lose then we lose. But what we want above everything is to win.”
“To help us fight for the league title, maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad thing to lose against Bradford, against Liverpool and against PSG. That way we could concentrate on just the Premier League until the end of the season.
“It could be an ideal situation for some, but not for us. Not with out mentality, our approach to the game or Chelsea’s DNA. We want to go as far as we can go.”
