Barcelona on Wednesday announced that the signing of Brazilian defender Douglas Pereira dos Santos has been completed. After weeks of discreet meetings, the Camp Nou club's representatives met with their counterparts at São Paolo and hammered out a deal worth six million euros for the 24-year-old right back. FC Barcelona's official website posted the news on Wednesday morning.
Although many observers have called Douglas' ability into doubt, Barcelona are believed to have been after his signature for some time. Indeed, several coaches in Spain who were consulted by AS said they had had "very good reports" about the player, adding that Douglas is "difficult to get the better of in defence and he offers things going forward."
Douglas is Barcelona's seventh signing of the summer, joining Claudio Bravo, Marc-André ter Stegen, Thomas Vermaelen, Jérémy Mathieu, Ivan Rakitic y Luis Suárez at Camp Nou. Rafinha has also been reincorporated in to the squad after a successful loan spell at Celta, where he was coached by new Barcelona manager Luis Enrique.
Douglas is expected to fly to Spain later this week to undergo a medical at Camp Nou.
