Xabi Alonso is set to leave Real Madrid. The news that first surfaced yesterday afternoon has been confirmed this morning. Bayern Munich announced via their official Twitter account (at 10.55am) that an agreement has been reached between Pep Guardiola’s club, Alonso and Real Madrid.
The German giants have confirmed that the Tolosa-born midfielder will undergo his medical today and the signing could be made official soon after. The player has not trained with his Real teammates at Valdebebas today and Xabi is expected to say his goodbyes through a press conference tomorrow.
“FC Bayern can confirm talks with Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid,” said the ‘tweet’ from the official Bayern account. “The Spaniard is expected to pass his medical examination today.”
During Bayern’s presentation of Mehdi Benatia, another new signing from Roma, Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer made mention of Xabi, saying he was pleased the midfielder has decided on a move to Munich. “He can help us immediately,” said Sammer, who also believes the 32-year-old can play “at least two years” at the highest level.
Bayern also issued an announcement on their website with quotes from vice president Jan-Christian Dreesen. “Hopefully the official announcement of the transfer will be done soon,” he said. “We believe that this move is necessary for our team to meet the needs of our fans and the whole club.”
Alonso, who renewed his contract on January 8 for two more years with improved terms, met with Real president Florentino Perez and Jose Angel Sanchez to inform them of his decision to leave the club and asked to be allowed to move to Munich.
With Javi Martinez and Thiago set to miss large chunks of the season through injury, as well as question marks surrounding the return of injured German international Bastian Schweinsteiger, Munich were looking for a defensive midfielder to bolster their squad. Guardiola has picked Alonso.
