2014: The year with most derby matches

Madrid supremacy. Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid have met 77 times in the league at the Bernabéu. There have been 52 home wins, 12 draws and 13 away wins. Atletico won in the league at the Bernabeu last season and a win today would mean they would secure back-to-back triumphs away from home for the first time ever.

Two wins in a row. The only teams that have secured back-to-back league wins at the Bernabéu are Athletic (1929-30 and 1930-31), Betis (1933-1934 and 1934-1935), Mallorca (2002-03 and 2003-04), Celta (2005-06 and 2006-07) and Barcelona (2008-09 and 2009-10).

Unbeaten. Atlético could become one of only a few sides to keep clean sheets at the Bernabéu in consecutive matches. Atleti managed it in 1967-68 and 1968-69 (both games finished 0-0). The other visitors to achieve the same feat were Betis in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

Challenge. Not a single team has managed two straight wins at the Bernabéu without conceding a single goal. Atleti could be the first team to achieve the feat.

Seven duels. Today marks the seventh (and last) Madrid derby of the year after the two cup matches in February, the league match in March, the Champions League final and both legs of the Spanish Super Cup. This year will be remembered as the one the two sides met the most. The previous record was five in 1928, 1929, 1959, 1964, 1980 and 1989. In the six derby matches this year Madrid have won three times (both cup matches and the Champions League final), Atletico won once in the Super Cup and the other two matches have been draws.

Casillas. The Madrid goalkeeper can match Raul as the player with the most wins in the history of the Madrid derby. Raul had 17 wins in 27 league derby matches while Iker has 16 wins in the 23 matches in which he’s played.

Cristiano. Has scored 13 goals against Atleti (seven in the league, five in the cup and one in the Champions League) in 16 official matches, the same figure the Portugal star has against Barcelona, Getafe and Malaga. Cristiano has enjoyed scoring most against Sevilla, with 18 goals coming in 12 matches.

Chicharito. The Mexican could make his debut for Madrid today. He will be the fourth Mexican to play in the all-white kit if so, after José Ramón Sauto (150 official matches between 1933 and 1944), José Luis Borbolla (two games in the 1945-46 season) and Hugo Sanchez (282 matches between 1985 and 1992). Chicharito scored on his debut with his two previous clubs: Chivas de Guadalajara and Manchester United. He also scored twice the first time he started for Mexico.

Cerci. He could become the seventh Italian to play for Atleti after Vieri, Serena, Torrisi, Venturin, Albertini and Abbiati. The only ones who have scored in a Madrid derby are Albertini (January 10, 2003) and Cassano (March 4, 2006).

Goals. Only ten players have scored in the league and Spanish Super Cup in the same season: Bakero (1988-89), Bebeto (1995-96), Giovanni (1997-98), Yordi (2001-02), Etoo (2003-04 ), Luis Fabiano (2007-08), Kanoute (2007-08), Mata (2008-09), Silva (2008-09) and Messi (2012-13). Mandzukic and Raul Garcia could join this list.

Simeone. The Argentine could become the sixth coach to win at the Bernabéu in consecutive league matches, something only previously achieved by Pentland (1929-30 and 1930-31 with Athletic), Patrick O'Connell (1933-1934 and 1934 35, with Betis), Baltasar Albéniz (1941-1942 and 1942-1943 with Celta), Fernando Vázquez (2005-06 and 2006-07 with Celta) and Guardiola (2008-09 and 2009-10, both with Barcelona).
