Mario Mandzukic has been discharged from the FREMAP Clinic in Majadahonda, Madrid. The Croatian striker underwent maxillofacial surgery to repair a fractured nose yesterday, doctors performing a closed reduction of nasal bones and septum.
Club doctor Pedro Luis Llopis declared the operation a complete success and feels sure that Mandzukic will be able to return to action in just over a week albeit with a protective mask. “He’s hoping to return to training on Sunday or Monday,” the doctor explained. “He trained the other day, before undergoing surgery which suggests how keen he is to get back with the squad. Under normal circumstances, a player with an injury like this would hope to be back playing in 15 days but if he wears a protective mask, he should be able to play within 10 days. He will be issued a personalized mask, the smallest and most comfortable one possible although it’s always a little complicated to play whilst wearing one”.
Mandzukic suffered the fracture during Atlético’s opening Champions League match against Olympiacos after receiving an elbow in the face from Kasami. Despite the injury, he continued on the pitch and even managed to score a header in the 3-2 defeat.
