Ronaldo closes in on Raúl's European scoring record

Cristiano Ronaldo's goal against Basel on Tuesday night was a further step towards another record; that of top scorer of all time in European competitions. The Portuguese's 30th-minute strike in the Bernabéu took him past former Italy striker Filippo Inzaghi, with 71 goals to the current AC Milan manager's 70. Ronaldo is now second in the all-time list of scorers behind only Raúl González, who bagged 76 overall during his time at Real Madrid and Schalke.

In the Champions League Ronaldo has found the net 68 times, just three goals short of Raúl's record of 71. The odds on the current Real number 7 superseding his illustrious forebear this season are short indeed. In last year's competition Ronaldo smashed two further historical records by scoring 17 goals overall and nine in the group stage, including a hat-trick at Galatasaray and two braces against Juventus and Copenhagen.
