Zinedine Zidane has steadied the ship at Castilla just before he will discover if he will face action over his lack of coaching badges. The sporting aspect has allied itself with the Frenchman so that he can face the question of his future from a position of calm. On Sunday, his side gifted him a 1-0 victory against Huesca, one of the prime candidates for a playoff place, courtesy of a goal from Álvaro Medrán, the standard-bearer for the reserve side.
The midfielder, who has got some first team experience under his belt this season, didn't enjoy his finest game but poked in the decisive strike in the 65th minute – his fourth of the season -- to earn Castilla three points.
The goal was enough to see off Huesca, who came to Valdebebas with the deserved reputation of a team that is solid at the back but that presented Castilla with too many chances. In the first half the home side came close to going ahead through a good chance that fell to Burgui and a Javi Noblejas free kick.
But it was Huesca that came closest to opening the scoring. The visitor's forward Guillem Martí played himself through and got away from Dani Suárez into a one-on-one with Castilla keeper Rubén Yáñez, but he inexplicably attempted a tame lob. It was a clear reprieve for Castilla, on the verge of half time.
Served notice, Zidane's team came out in tune in the second period and carved out two chances in the opening three minutes but individualism got the better of Raúl de Tomás and Burgui in the area. Once Medrán had put the home side Luis Tevenet's side went after the equalizer but failed to genuinely trouble the home side. Juan José Narváez had the opportunity to finish the match off in the 91st minute but failed to execute when through one-on-one with Huesca keeper Dani Jiménez.
The victory gave Zidane's Castilla three points and moved the side into a comfortable position in the table after a shaky start to the season. Castilla have now claimed 10 out of the last 12 available points.
