Respite for Zidane as Castilla topples leader Barakaldo

Real Madrid Castilla recorded just their second victory of the season in a controversial match at the stadium of the group leader, Barakaldo, who ended the match with nine players on the pitch. Álvaro Medrán scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot to relieve some of the pressure building on Zinedine Zidane, who took over as Castilla coach in the summer and whose side sat bottom at the outset of the match.

In the first half it was the home side, who remain top of Segunda B Group II despite the result, who had the better of the game. With control of possession and the midfield, Axier Intxaurraga’s side carved out the lion's share of chances to open the scoring, but both Haritz Albisua and Gerardo Carrera were unable to beat Alfonso Herrero. As the game progressed Castilla began to find their feet and spent more of the final 10 minutes before the break in the opposition half than their own, albeit without causing Barakaldo keeper Pato Guillén too much discomfort. A fine piece of link play that culminated in Castilla midfielder Sergio Aguza's strike was well saved by Guillén.

After the restart the game continued in a similar vein with both sides probing the flanks. After a chance apiece, Castilla full back Javier Noblejas broke into the box and was brought down by Carrera, who was given his marching orders. Medrán, Castilla's standout player in the match, converted. Things swiftly got worse for the home side, who had Aitor Aldalur sent off as well, but the leader still pulled out the kitchen sink in search of an equalizer that failed to find the goal that would have prevented their first dropped points of the season.
