Spain's Boquete nominated for 2014 World Player award

The captain of the Spain women's team, Verónica Boquete, has been nominated among the 10 candidates for the 2014 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year award. Among the nominees are last year's winner, Germany goalkeeper Nadine Angerer, and Brazilian five-time winner of the award Marta.


Boquete, who rose to prominence when named Player of the Year in the WPS while at Philadelphia Independence, currently plays for Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.


FIFA announced the shortlist on Friday, with the winner to be crowned in Zurich on January 12, 2015: The candidates are: Nadine Angerer (GER), Verónica Boquete (SPA), Nilla Fischer (SWE), Nahomi Kawasumi (JAP), Nadine Kessler (GER), Marta (BRA), Aya Miyama (JAP), Louisa Necib (FRA), Lotta Schelin (SWE), Abby Wambach (USA).
