Thiago suffers new knee injury and faces lengthy layoff

Thiago Alcântara suffered another injury breakdown during Bayern Munich's Tuesday training session, the Bundesliga club has confirmed. The Spain international tore a knee ligament and will have to undergo surgery to correct the problem and faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines. Thiago missed several months of last season with the same injury and Tuesday's recurrence happened precisely where the previous tear occurred.

Thiago suffered the original injury on March 29 during a match against Hoffenheim and was expected to be out of action for eight weeks. However, the injury later flared up again and prevented him from being selected for the World Cup in Brazil.

"What can I say?" said Thiago through the club's official website. "Of course I am deeply disappointed and at my wits end at the moment. Why is it always me? But I will not give up. I will fight back again and look forward to celebrating my comeback with Bayern Munich."

"We are all deeply moved and upset over this latest injury," said sporting director Matthias Sammer. "After so much time he was at the point of coming back but he knows that Bayern Munich is with him. We will do everything possible to make sure that he recovers and he will help us to win many titles."
