Cristiano plays down Old Trafford meeting with Argentina

Cristiano Ronaldo, who became the top goal scorer in the history of the European Championships in Faro this evening, insists that he is not overly concerned with picking up what would be his third Balon d’Or award and also defused next week’s friendly clash with Argentina in which he will be face to face with Leo Messi.

“It’s a friendly – if it was the World Cup then it would be special but it’s only a friendly and it doesn’t count for anything more than that. Of course it will be very special for me to return to Old Trafford,” Cristiano told Portuguese Television RTP after tonight’s EURO 2016 qualifier with Armenia.

The player was says he is calm about January’s FIFA gala. “What I needed to do, I’ve already done. I’ve won trophies – important ones, I’ve beaten records in other competitions, I am well placed in the running but I’m not going to get obsessed about it. The national team coaches and captains will give their vote and that’s all, I’m relaxed,” he added.

As for overtaking Jon Dahl Tomasson’s goals record, he said: “I knew that sooner or later I would beat it,” and explained that scoring his 23^rd goal in the tournament wasn’t easy, “They parked two buses in their penalty area and sat back waiting for us to make a mistake”.
