Cristiano Ronaldo continues to rewrite the history books, this time with the Portuguese national side. His winner in this evening’s EURO 2016 qualifier against Armenia helped Portugal climb into second in Group I and also sees him set a new tournament record – it was his 23rd goal in the European Championships, overtaking the 22 scored by Denmark’s Jon Dahl Tomasson and Turkey’s Hakan Sukur.
The Real Madrid forward has found the net 17 times during the group stage of the tournament and hit another six in the finals. His first goal in the competition was against Greece at EURO 2004 on June 12 2004 in Portugual’s opening game at the event. He has since scored another five in the final phase, making him the third top scorer at that stage behind the current UEFA President Michel Platini who scored nine with France and former England striker Alan Shearer, who hit seven in three tournaments (EURO 1992, EURO 1996 and EURO 2000).
As for Spain’s representatives in the list, Raúl is La Roja’s leading scorer in European Championship history with 19 and just behind him with 18 is David Villa.
