Antoine Griezmann was Atlético Madrid’s star in their comeback win at San Mamés. The Frenchman recognised that his performance in Bilbao was his was complete since moving to Atleti in the summer.
He said: “Because of the goals it was my best match at Atlético. But the work of my team-mates on the pitch helped me a lot. It went well for me and now we have a week to rest, recharge our batteries and return to the top.”
The forward had his opportunity having managed just 43 minutes of action over the course of Atlético’s four previous matches.
He added: “I needed minutes, the coach gave them to me and I enjoyed them on the pitch. I hope I can continue doing it like so.”
However, Griezmann remained cautious, despite showing his best form: “I always try to give the best of myself, but I am not going to score three goals every match, so I have to keep working. I am confident, working and I am sure that I will have more opportunities.”
The Frenchman revealed the secret behind the team’s much improved performance after the break at San Mamés.
“Simeone asked us to give it all, that we should finish the year, which has been fantastic, well,” he said. “He told us to go forward, to press and to play as we know how to.”
Additionally, Griezmann was up against Athletic Club, one of his favourite opponents. The former Real Sociedad man has now scored nine goals in 10 matches against the Bilbao club.
He concluded: “San Mamés is always a difficult ground. We didn’t produce a good first half, but in the second half we tried to take a step forward. I am very happy because of the goals, but more because of the win.”
