Atlético de Madrid President Enrique Cerezo spoke about the club’s latest signing Fernando Torres on Cadena COPE’s ‘El partido de las 12’ programme last night. During the interview, Cerezo confirmed that it was coach Diego Simeone who had petitioned to recover the striker, who left the Calderón in 2007.
The Atlético President admitted that it had been a complex operation because Torres was committed to a two-year loan deal from Chelsea while Alessio Cerci’s agent had been negotiating with Inter Milan. “Sometimes things work out well because they have been dealt with correctly. In this case it was a happy ending. Talks had been going on for the past few weeks. AC Milan were keen on taking Cerci and under the circumstances, everyone has ended up happy with the arrangement. It was one of those occasions in life when everything went according to plan,” Cerezo explained.
He also revealed that Torres’ capture was an express request from the coach. “Simeone hardly ever asks us for anything but he asked for Torres. It wasn’t easy to bring him back here but after a lot of hard work, we made it possible. It’s a happy and important day for Atleti,” he said.
President Enrique Cerezo confirmed that Atlético will pay Torres’ salary while Milan will pay Cerci’s but insisted, “During negotiations with Fernando, the subject of money wasn’t raised – there was no need. His heart is at Atlético and he is excited to be coming back, as are the fans”.
Torres, who will wear the number 19 shirt, was not in Atlético’s plans before this latest attempt to bring him home. “This was the only possibility of him coming back,” Cerezo continued. “His return if for sporting reasons, he wants to show that he is still a top level player. He was, and will continue to be, a great footballer. He is going to be a big help to the team. Watching Torres back at the Calderón is going to be a real treat”.
