Madrid end up winners when Barça don’t win at Getafe

“We are worried about being four points behind. It is logical, things become more difficult, but there is still a lot of the Liga season left,” said Sergio Busquets following Barcelona’s 0-0 draw with Getafe at the Coliseum on Saturday. Maybe it is because nobody is alien to the ‘evil of the Coliseum’: each time that Barcelona have failed to win there, Real Madrid have ended up as champions. It happened in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2011-12. And after Barcelona’s latest disappointment at Getafe, Real Madrid find themselves four points clear of Luis Enrique’s side.

Barcelona have played Getafe away 11 times in La Liga. They won seven of those (1-2 in 2004-05, 1-3 in 2005-06, 0-1 in 2008-09, 0-2 in 2009-10, 1-3 in 2010-11, 1-4 in 2012-13 y 2-5 last season).

The first time that Barcelona failed to leave the Coliseum with three points was in 2006-07 (1-1), when Fabio Capello’s Real Madrid side won La Liga due to their better head-to-head record against the Catalan team. Those dropped points proved to be decisive. The following year Barça lost at Getafe (2-0) and Real Madrid, who were under the stewardship of Bernd Schuster, won the league. The last time that Real Madrid won the league, which occurred under José Mourinho, Barça lost 1-0 at the Coliseum thanks to a goal from Valera and countless wasted chances. That was the year that Real Madrid won the league with 100 points.
