Madrid's squad is worth 688m euros; San Lorenzo's, 37m euros

The Club World Cup final will pit Real Madrid against San Lorenzo. The European champions against the South American ones, the supposed key duel for supremacy in the world of football. And yet, the differences between both squads are more than substantial; they could almost be described as abyssal, which justifies the distance in the betting for the decisive match.

According to the website ‘transfermarkt.com’, a reference site for statistics and economic qualification in football, the gap is huge: Real Madrid’s squad has a value which is 19 times that of San Lorenzo's. Carlo Ancelotti’s team are valued at 688.8m euros while the Argentine team, the most recent winners of the Copa Libertadores, have a squad which is valued at 37.1m euros. The conclusion – the Bernabéu club’s squad is worth 18.56 times that of their opponent’s in Marrakech on Saturday.

In fact, seven Real Madrid footballers, by themselves, are worth more than the entire San Lorenzo squad put together. This is the case with Sergio Ramos (45m euros), Luka Modric (55m euros), Toni Kroos (45m euros), James Rodríguez (60m euros), Gareth Bale (80m euros), Cristiano Ronaldo (120m euros) and Karim Benzema (45m euros). Nothing like the Argentines, whose player with the highest estimated worth is Barrientos, valued at 5m euros.

They are just numbers, figures that are not too useful when the ball starts to roll, but couple them with the difference in the budgets of both clubs (Real Madrid’s budget is 540m euros; San Lorenzo’s is just 10m euros, 54 times lower) and you get an idea of how complicated it would be for the South American champions to lift the Club World Cup trophy.
