Prince of Jordan Al Hussein to challenge for FIFA presidency

Prince of Jordan Ali Bin Al Hussein today announced his intention to run for the FIFA presidency.

The Jordanian prince, 39, has been vice president of FIFA since 2011 and he made the announcement through his Twitter account.

“I am pleased to announce today my intention to stand as a candidate for the position of President of FIFA,” wrote Al Hussein.

He added that it was not an easy decision, which “came after careful consideration and many discussions with respected FIFA colleagues over the last few months.”

With his candidacy, the Jordanian prince, who is going for the position currently held by Joseph Blatter, aims to “shift the focus away from administrative controversy and back to the sport.”

Al Hussein said in his statement that “the headlines should be about football, the beautiful sport, not about FIFA”, and added that football “deserves a world-class governing body – a service organisation and a model of ethics, transparency and good governance .”

The third possible candidate for president is Jerome Champagne, 55 from France, a former deputy general secretary of FIFA, who was the first to announce his candidacy last August.

On January 29 the nominations, which must be supported by at least five of the 209 members of the organisation, will be formally presented. Elections are scheduled for May 29 in Zurich.
