"We’re grateful for the respect Madrid showed our fans”

Markel Bergara expressed his condolences to the family of the Real Sociedad supporter who tragically died in a car accident as he made his way down from San Sebastián to the capital to support his team against Real Madrid. The midfielder also paid thanks to Real Madrid, who agreed to show their respects by holding a minute’s silence before kick-off.

Real Sociedad fan Ignacio Gribi together with four friends, began their journey from San Sebastián to Madrid at 5:00 hours on Saturday morning. The car in which the supporters were travelling collided with another vehicle in Miranda de Ebro. The 23-year-old was rushed to the Santiago Apóstol Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

On hearing the news, both teams wore black armbands as a minute’s silence was observed at the Bernabéu.

Speaking in today’s press conference, Bergara said: “On behalf of the club and all of the players I would like to say that we lend our full support to the family at this time. It’s terrible news. It’s a tragedy that someone who was coming along to support us could suffer something like this. We’re all very sad about it. Both Real Sociedad and Real Madrid handled the matter impeccably. The respect that Madrid showed towards us and towards our fans was something to be admired and we are all very grateful”.
