Saúl given all-clear after kidney blow in Leverkusen match

Atlético Madrid midfielder Saúl Ñíguez has been given the all-clear to return to Madrid from Gelsenkirchen after recovering from a heavy blow to his kidney during the Champions League match against Leverkusen on Wednesday. The 20-year-old is expected to return to the Spanish capital "in the next few hours," the club stated on Saturday night.

The midfielder suffered the blow to his kidney during the first half and was replaced by Raúl García. He was admitted to the Leverkusen Clinic and remained there under observation where he underwent scans and had a catheter inserted to drain excess fluid from the affected area.

On Saturday, after three days in the German medical centre, Saúl was given the all-clear by doctors and will be accompanied back to Spain by club doctor José María Villalón, who remained in Gelsenkirchen during the player's treatment.
