Fernando Alonso returned to his F1 car this morning for the first time in over a month. As was anticipated, the Asturian driver was not at 100% of his maximum capacity and finished poorly in the first practice session in Sepang. The driver himself admitted this lack of fitness and claimed it was ''normal''.
How was it being back in the car again?
It was fine, I’m happy to be driving again after being out for a month. Driving normally again was a step forward. Today, in reality is like my second day of pre-season and we just need to work on improving
Did you notice an improvement to the car from the last time you drove?
Yes, it feels better. The motor is better and it feels far more flexible. The aerodynamics feel like they’ve improved too. The high temperatures mean we are cautious about the tyres, brakes and cooling system. We still have plenty of work ahead.
Are you setting yourself a target for finishing on Sunday?
No, there is no set objective, we’ll try and achieve the best time possible, being aware of our limitations.
Is the engine at its maximum capacity?
No, no, it’s still quite limited.
Physically, how did you feel?
I’m still not perfect, that’s quite logical as I haven’t driven for a month. I’d say I’m at 80-85%. I hope to be back to top fitness for the race in Bahrain or China.
