Ancelotti: “We won’t get far playing like we did tonight”

Carlo Ancelotti was upfront about Real Madrid cheerless display in this evening’s Champions League meeting with Schalke 04, telling reporters afterwards: “Playing like we did tonight, it’s clear that we won’t go very far”.

Has the team hit rock bottom?

I'm very sorry; as everyone saw, we played very badly and that is bad for the image of this club. All the criticism we get and whistling we receive is justified – that will only serve to motivate us even more. I still have complete faith in this team because I know what it is capable of giving. We need to continue working and concentrate on the job in hand. All of us need to do a lot more.

The team couldn’t really play much worse than it did tonight…

We know that we placed badly and we’re keen to do much better. I have spoken to the players about it.

What did you say to them at half-time?

We need to look at our defence, that's where all our errors were. No team has put four goals past us at home – apart from Barça but two of them were penalties. We lacked organization.

Is it down to a lack of confidence?

That’s true, we do lack confidence. We’ve also lost a little of the physical element to our game. We’ve got problems in a lot of areas – in attack, in defence, in impulse, desire, concentration....

Would it surprise you if you were to be fired?

I’m not thinking about that. I’ll continue doing my work, and try to do the best I can. I need to do better because it’s the coach’s responsibility for what happened out on the pitch tonight.

Maybe the players have lost faith in you?

I don’t think so. Right now, people will be talking about all kinds of things but we have to speak clearly – our performance tonight was poor. It’s incomprehensible what has happened to us since December. We need to do more.

Did you ever think that the team might be going out?

No, but it’s true that we suffered right up until the end. We didn’t start the game as we should have and alter that, anything Could have happened.

What is the reason behind the problems the team is experiencing?

It’s not easy to explain, we have lost confidence in our game, that’s the main problem.

Do you have the Keeling that Madrid have made fools out of themselves?

No, we're professionals; we work hard and we defend this shirt with honour - we don't make fools out of ourselves.
