Emery: “Aggressive, us? We'll let the ref decide about that”

Unai Emery was all smiles in today’s press conference as he looked ahead to tomorrow’s all-Spanish Europa League tie between Villarreal and Sevilla. When asked about rival coach Marcelino’s dig about Sevilla’s aggressive midfield pair, Emery retorted, “I won’t make an assessment of our opponents, all I want to talk about are our virtues. Others can call us a physical side if they like but there will be a referee to decide what is a foul and what isn’t. We’ll play with all of our available weapons – within the rules”.

The Sevilla boss is expecting a closely-fought game at El Madrigal: “It’s an opportunity for both teams – both of us want to pave the way to the quarter finals and we will be giving the maximum. We have complete faith in the referee to ensure that it’s a fair game,” Emery said. “What has happened in previous meetings between us doesn’t count for anything. We’re up against a side who have similar characteristics to Borussia [Mönchengladbach], there’s only one point between us in the league and we are on a par with Villarreal. In my opinion there are no clear favourites”.

Emery added that his only doubt is whether Tremoulinas or Carriço will start the match, which gets underway at 21:05 CET at El Madridgal tomorrow.
