Ranko Popovic, the coach of Real Zaragoza, was sent off for “dealing a blow to the genital area of RCD Mallorca delegate Antonio Tugores Mayol” in today’s Segunda Division match between the two sides.
Zaragoza lost 3-2 at the Son Moix Stadium in a game Popovic described as “very tense” and in which he saw red in the 45th minute for the altercation which took place in the tunnel.
The visitors also saw Pedro López and Vullnet Basha sent off in a match where Popovic said his side “deserved more”. “The guys gave everything,” the Serbian added after the match. On the 13th minute dismissal of Pedro López, he said: “I don’t understand why Pedro has been sent off for two unintentional challenges. The second one was far too harsh.”
With regards to his own sending off, Popovic said: “I was talking to the referee peacefully, without saying anything. I said that he didn’t like the approach of my players and that I would try to calm them down. At that moment, the official on the pitch grabbed my hand and I pushed him away and the assistant referee told me that I was sent off.”
In his notes, referee Lesma Lopez said: “In the 45th minute, Ranko Popovic was sent off for the following reason: “dealing a blow to the genital area of the RCD Mallorca delegate, Antonio Tugores Mayol. It happened at the end of the first half and in the tunnel that leads to the dressing rooms. It was seen by the assistant referee.”
