German referee Felix Brych has been appointed as the official to lead Wednesday’s Champions League derby clash between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.
Brych, a lawyer aged 39, has been an international referee since 2007, three years after he started officiating in the Bundesliga. His first match was a friendly between the Netherlands and Ireland. Amongst other matches, he took charge of matches in the London Olympics, the Confederations Cup in 2013, the World Cup in Brazil last summer (two matches) and the final of last season’s Europa League between Sevilla and Benfica.
Neither Real Madrid nor Atlético Madrid have suffered a defeat with the German in charge.
Brych took charge of Madrid’s match at Milan in the group stages of the 2009-10 Champions League (1-1), in the quarter-finals of the 2010-11 competition against Tottenham Hotspur (4-0) and the 2011-12 season against APOEL (0-3) as well as against Copenhagen in the group stages of the 2013-14 competition (0-2).
He officiated Atleti for the first time in the second qualifying round of the 2007-08 UEFA Cup, which resulted in a 2-1 win for the Madrid club. He also took charge of Atleti in a match at Panathinaikos in the 2009-10 campaign (2-3) and in the quarter-finals of last season’s competition against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
This season. Brych took charge of the match which saw Diego Simeone’s side edge out Juventus 1-0 in the group stages.
