James equals his best scoring record with 14 goals

Ancelotti has yet to publically award James “non-negotiable” status alongside the ‘BBC’ and Isco but in practice the Colombian is set to be an untouchable piece in Ancelotti’s jigsaw. Even more so without Modric and Bale. His numbers highlight his importance. He has equalled the best goalscoring record of his career with 14 goals in 37 games. He reached the same figure in the 2011-12 campaign with Porto when he was named as ‘New Player of the Year’ in the Portuguese league.

There he played as attacking midfieler and at Madrid he has enjoyed more of a free role. He has more importance as the third man in Madrid’s three-pronged attack if we take in his goals and assists into account. He has 13 assists so far and only Cristiano, with 50 goals and 16 assists and Benzema, with 21 goals and 12 assists, have contributed more. Bale has 15 goals and ten assists and Isco has four goals and 11 assists. In addition, he is on course to achieve his most assists in one season. His best was 14 with Monaco last term.

James arrived in Madrid for 80 million euros on the back of a superb World Cup but with the uncertainty over whether he could fill the void left by Di María (with Manchester United he has scored three goals and produced ten assists). The Colombian, who has spent only eight months in the famous white shirt (with an injury covering 61 days in the middle) has had no trouble adapting and has star statistics. Without Modric and Bale, Madrid cling to his top form to help them beat Atlético on Wednesday.
