There are only ten match-days left in the La Liga season. The two title contenders face similar schedules, albeit with certain differences. The four-point advantage that Barcelona hold over Real Madrid allows Luis Enrique’s men to fail on two occasions, although the European champions have one more match at home and would prevail if the destination of the title is decided by ‘goal average’.
Madrid will play at home to Granada today (Sunday) and they will also host Eibar, Málaga, Almería, Valencia and Getafe. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have to visit Rayo Vallecano, Celta Vigo, Sevilla and Espanyol. The trip to Sevilla and the visit of Valencia represent their most challenging match-days.
Barcelona, meanwhile, began the defence of their advantage away at Celta, a team that beat them at the Camp Nou in the first half of the season thanks to a goal from Joaquín Larrivey. After that, they will welcome Almería, Valencia, Getafe, Real Sociedad and Deportivo La Coruña to the Camp Nou, while they will have to travel to Sevilla, Espanyol, Córdoba and Atlético Madrid.
Madrid are more hopeful of cutting Barça’s lead on the match-days that take place on the 11th and the 19th of April, when they will welcome Eibar and Málaga to the Bernabéu while Barcelona play away at Sevilla at the Sánchez Pizjuán and then against Valencia at the Camp Nou. However, it is the trip to the champions that upsets the balance of the calendars: on the weekend of May 17 Barcelona will lock horns with Atlético Madrid at the Vicente Calderón while Madrid will travel to Cornellá to take on Espanyol.
Furthermore, Barça and Madrid are both immersed in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and that could have an effect on the La Liga title race. The first legs of the last eight, against PSG and Atlético respectively, will take place on the 14th and the 15th of April, just before Barcelona welcome Valencia and Madrid host Málaga.
The return legs, one week, are scheduled for the 21st and 22nd of April, before the away matches with Espanyol and Celta Vigo respectively. The Champions League semi-final first legs are scheduled for the 5th and 6th of May, with the return legs of the last four to take place one week later on the 12th and 13th of May.
