Astonishing Eibar! After beating Real Sociedad, last night they gave Atlético a major scare on the day Simeone’s side were finally presented with the league trophy and eventually managed to hang on to secure maximum points. Two goals from set-pieces gave Atlético the lead and a home win appeared to be the logical outcome for the game. Eibar then scored with an incredible, unstoppable, top corner screamer from Abraham and they took control dominating the second half and had two chances to snatch a point. Atleti conceding four points from their opening two fixtures with Real Madrid up next would have been deemed as a disastrous start.
This evening in Anoeta, Real Madrid take on a downcast Real Sociedad reeling from a disastrous opening to their season following defeat away at Eibar and elimination from the Europa League. Questions are even being asked regarding the future of coach Arrasate but with the continuous departure of key players such as Illarramendi, Claudio Bravo and Griezmann, it’s difficult to map out an ongoing project. Today they may fear the worst against a Madrid side without Cristiano, who has yet to admit that he is fully recovered from injury. The disarray amongst the Madrid medical team using physio Chueca as a scapegoat is not helping help in tackling the issue properly.
With no injured Cristiano, I imagine we’ll see James take on a more attacking role closer to Bale and Benzema and without the obligation to track back, it’s a great opportunity for him. Madrid will also be aware of Barça’s result in their trip away at Villarreal always a difficult away fixture for the Catalan side. This new-look Barça is under much early season scrutiny and it appears that the injured Iniesta and Piqué are perfectly fit, if we are to believe what Luis Enrique says. It appears that Del Bosque is and this Barça are somewhat out of synch.
