Cristiano to take a break but plans return for Madrid derby

Cristiano has decided to take a break from playing and won’t feature in tonight’s game at Anoeta. He has decided to take advantage of the forthcoming two weeks (which features the international break) to undergo a specific rehabilitation plan which will enable him to return in time for the Madrid derby against Atlético on September 13th. Ancelotti made the announcement in yesterday’s press conference: “He`s fine, but we’ve decided to use these two weeks to get him ready for the derby and the first Champions League fixture with optimum fitness”.

Cristiano made his mind up to take time out from playing after a session with Doctor Noronha last Thursday. The new Portuguese team doctor strongly advised that Ronaldo stop playing in an attempt to curtail his ongoing pain. This is underlying reason why he hasn’t been selected by the national side to play against Albania (“according to our medical team, he is not fit to play”, added Portuguese coach Paulo Bento) and also why Cristiano has been omitted for the Madrid squad travelling to San Sebastian for the game against Real Sociedad.

The intention is that Cristiano shakes off the injury he´s been suffering in his left leg since the game against Dortmund in early April when he was substituted complaining of pains in his left knee. That was then compounded when he suffered a tear to the tendon in his left knee. The treatment and medical advice at the time saw the Portuguese player lose faith with Madrid’s doctors and Ronaldo enlisted the services of physio Joaquín Juan and then began to entrust in Doctor Noronha who had previously operated on Pepe´s knee.
