If Cristiano says he'd do things differently...

Real Madrid signed Chicharito on deadline day with little fanfare. A brief signing of the contracts and no fans at the stadium, nothing like the lavish presentations we have become accustomed to. Chicharito is a good striker, yes, but he falls a little short of Real Madrid's current aspirations. Those who think the worst and suspect that everything is designed to create an aura of immunity around Karim Benzema -- to eliminate any serious competition – have their arguments. Gonzalo Higuaín left, Álvaro Morata left... and now Manchester United sign Radamel Falcao and on the same day loan Chicharito to Madrid.

One day, Benzema will have to justify so much protection. In hard numbers, he has scored two goals in Real's last 17 games. It might seem an opportunistic calculation and maybe it is, because that is not his overall average. But association between the pink and melancholy figure of Benzema in Anoeta and Madrid at this point in time; it was a result that came about because of the vanity of Florentino Pérez. And the distraction in extremis of Chicharito doesn't seem to have convinced even the club itself. There was no throwing open of the Bernabéu's doors to acclaim the new arrival. Benzema can rest easy. The man who has arrived in his shadow did so without any spotlights to illuminate him.

Cristiano Ronaldo let slip yesterday that if he was in charge, he would do things differently. He was not referring directly to Chicharito, that is certain, but to the totum revolutum that has picked apart the team that won the Décima, a team organized on the fly by Carlo Ancelotti and which won the title on the back of 17 goals from the brilliant Portuguese forward, a Champions League record. Cristiano knows what it takes to score so many goals and to win Europe's elite competition, so it is no surprise he is bewildered by the upheaval that has seen players come and go. For that reason he simply said plainly that he wouldn't have done things in this way.
