Cristiano a goal away from Raúl’s European record

Cristiano Ronaldo scored Real Madrid’s first goal of the evening at Anfield in the Group B Champions League match. A classy one-two with Colombian player James in the 23rd minute put Ronaldo in, and under pressure he slipped the ball past Mignolet in the Liverpool goal.

With that strike the Portuguese player takes his European tally to 70, just one away from Raúl González Blanco, who finished his European Cup career with 71.

This was also Cristiano’s first goal at Anfield, despite having visited Liverpool’s ground five times before in the shirt of Manchester United.

Ronaldo came off with 16 minutes to go, presumably to save his legs for this Saturday’s Clásico. Khedira came on in his stead.
