Real Madrid’s youngsters lose right at the death

A Welsh lad called Harry Wilson made it 3-2 for Liverpool in the 87th minute of the Youth League match against Real Madrid’s youngsters. The win for the English side leaves three teams on six points in the table: Real Madrid, Liverpool and Basel. Ludogorets suffered a 5-0 defeat by the Swiss at home.

This was a fairly topsy-turvy game. Madrid were 2-0 down at half-time and it could have been more. But the visitors underwent a metamorphosis at half-time, fought back to 2-2, continued to look for the winner, which they deserved, but eventually fell to a hammer blow in the final minutes.

In the first 30 minutes Liverpool steam-rollered Real, and had four clear chances, thanks to Liverpool’s two incisive wide players: Harry Wilson and Ryan Kent. Take note of the name of the former, who has taken Bale's record as the youngest player to get a cap for Wales. The Real Madrid man did it when he was 16 and 315 days, Wilson when he was 16 and 203 days.

He tormented the Real Madrid defence. Brannagan got the opener when Oliveros in the Madrid goal failed to trap any number of rebounds and the Liverpool man made it 1-0. Five minutes later, another rebound, this time off the post from a Wilson free-kick, and Brewitt made it 2-0.

Nothing went right for Madrid in the first half, with Mayoral even missing a penalty after 36 minutes, when he slipped just before striking the ball.

Real Madrid coach Ramis’ half-time chat had an effect because the Madrid side that came out were a different side to the one seen in the first half. Liverpool also did them a favour taking off Kent and putting on Ejaria. Madrid, starting 45 minutes late, took Liverpool to pieces. Lienhart made it 2-1 from a corner before Borja Sánchez made it 2-2 with a nice strike.

Madrid continued to look the better side, attacking well but failing to make many more chances. And it was Liverpool who took advantage when Sinclair stole the ball as Madrid came out of defence and got it to Wilson, who slotted home. Three points for Liverpool and the group on a knife edge.
