Fifa exec: "We'll look at reducing Luis Suárez's ban"

Eugenio Figueredo, a Fifa vice-president and former head of the CONMEBOL federation, has refused to rule out a bid to have the ban imposed upon Luis Suárez for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup reduced on appeal.

"When a little more time has passed we are going to look at how, politically, this punishment can be softened a little," Figueredo told Uruguayan television station Channel 12 on Wednesday.

Suárez, who transferred from Liverpool to Barcelona during the summer despite the ban, was sanctioned with four months of suspension from all-football related activity and a nine-game international ban for official matches.

In Figueredo's view, it was impossible to have the sanction reduced initially because "it was based on very solid foundations, which were impenetrable from every angle," adding that the efforts made at the time were "useless."

Figueredo also stated that Suárez is now in a "more comfortable atmosphere" than he was previously, alluding to his new club.

After the ban was handed won, Suárez was inactive until September 24, when he featured in a friendly game between Barcelona B and the Indonesian under-19 national side but did not feature for his country for the recent friendlies against Japan and South Korea. However, he has been called up by Uruguay manager Óscar Tabárez for the upcoming friendly fixtures against Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Suárez is expected to make his official debut for Barcelona against Real Madrid on October 25, a day after his ban expires.
