Koke: Leader of UCL assists

Against Malmo on Wednesday Koke took another little step toward establishing himself as one of the finest midfielders in Europe – assuming he is not already among the elite – and he demonstrated it by showing everything that the complete midfielder should aspire to have.

Koke ended the stalemate against the Swedish team by opening the scoring before providing no less than three assists. Right now the Vallecas-born midfielder tops the Champions League assists chart with four assists but additionally, as a mark of his ability to sacrifice himself for the team, he is also ranked tenth on the list of footballers who have run the most in this season’s competition, having covered 36,831km of ground in the 270 minutes that he has played.

Koke is the complete midfielder. He organises the play, reads the match, arrives in the opponent’s box, is deadly from set pieces, assists, defends and is versatile. All in one.

This season the midfielder has already featured in 17 matches, 16 of which he has completed, for club and country. The only action he has missed came during Spain’s match against Macedonia, when he was substituted with 13 minutes remaining.

Last summer he had the option to choose where to ply his trade this term, having received several offers from Spain and from abroad, but he opted to stay at “home”.

With the exception of the Champions League, the 22-year-old has already won each competition in which he has competed in at least once – and all with Atlético.
