Neymar offered more than Messi

The place, the Bird’s Nest in Beijing, is not important. The teams are Brazil and Argentina, this is the Superclásico, and that’s enough for the world to focus its gaze on it. Neither side wanted to lose but only one could win. That was Brazil who, after the thumping 1-7 defeat against Germany in the World Cup, still lacks brains but enjoys the fight. Two goals from No.9 Tardelli, called-up from Atletico Mineiro by Dunga, were enough to defeat the new Argentina of Martino, who were slow, without spark and sluggish in their attempts.

From the overall battle, the South America Super Clasic, to the individual one: Neymar against Messi. The stars of today and tomorrow, friends at Barcelona and opponents today. With a focus on both, Neymar was the winner. The Brazilian was more free, strong and determined in his actions as a leader, while Leo remained entangled in the web woven by the defensive lines of Brazil, lacking influence on the game.

Neither found the back of the net. Neymar came close with a couple of good opportunities: a dribble that left him one-on-one with Romero but that resulted in a relaxed shot, and the second time when he sliced his effort.

Messi, playing in a role similar to the one which Luis Enrique is looking to slot him into at Barcelona, only attempted two shots at Jefferson. They were on target but not enough to beat the Brazilian. It was a day to forget in general for the ‘No.10’. After crashing several free-kicks against the wall, the referee granted Messi’s wish: he removed the obstacles. At 1-0, Danilo sent a ball through for Di María. He brought a foul inside the box that gave Messi the chance to score from the penalty spot. Jefferson saved the penalty and the rebound sailed wide. The eternal debate continues: the Messi with Barça and the Messi with Argentina.

In the rest of the battle between Neymar and Messi, there was a chance to see other performances: a determined Di María, as always; Aguero passed up a number of chances. Above all, Diego Tardelli. With two quick goals he has shot to fame: he volleyed in the first from inside the area following indecision by Zabaleta and then headed in a cross from Oscar. Two touches, two goals.
