Paco Jémez: "If it was up to me, I would not sanction Zidane"

Paco Jémez, the coach of Rayo, was one of the first people to complain that Zinedine Zidane was coaching Castilla without having the correct coaching licences for Segunda B. His thoughts were aired at a press conference after his side’s defeat against Barcelona (0-2) when the Cordoba-born coach said: “Zidane cannot coach in Spain”.

His comments brought about a flurry of reaction from both angles. The college of coaches advocated his stance but Carlo Ancelotti and Johan Cruyff, who went through a similar situation as Zidane when he arrived as coach of Barcelona, supported the Frenchman. Madrid’s Italian coach offered a reply to Jemez, saying: “It is not easy for me to talk about it. I think this coach has spoken too much. Zidane is doing the course in France, he spent two years doing it. In other countries you can coach while you do the course. When I started coaching I hadn’t done the course”.

Zidane’s punishment was confirmed today by a judge for the Spanish Football Federation: a three-month ban. For Paco, he was asked on television channel La Sexta at the LFP Awards hala about the ruling and he said: “If it was up to me, I would not sanction Zidane. I would have given him more time to get his qualification.”
