Cristiano and Messi: a rivalry that sets them apart

Cristiano and Messi, Messi and Cristiano. The Argentinian's hat-trick against Sevilla and Ronaldo’s double in Ipurua, just the latest example that these are the planets most decisive football players and they feed off each other since they began to share the same eco-system, the Spanish league. The statistics are telling: since the 2009-10 season, the first when their paths crossed in La Liga, both have an average of over one goal per league game. Cristiano 1,11 (197 goals in 176 games) and Messi 1,10 (199 in 180 games)...

These incredible goal scoring accomplishments date back to the time when Ronaldo was playing for Manchester United. The Portuguese player’s best season at Old Trafford was the 2007-08 season when he notched 31 goals (top scorer in the Premier League and Golden Boot winner) with an average of 0,91 goals per game. Messi, had his best season with Barça in the 2008-09 season scoring 23 goals, an average of 0,74 goals per game.

Each player spurs the other on. In the last five years, only Cristiano or Leo have earned the Spanish league Pichichi (top goals corer) title. Messi on three occasions (2009-10, 2011-12 and 2012-13) and Cristiano on two (2011-12 y 2013-14). These achievements also saw each player pick up that particular years Golden Boot award.

A non-stop contest that has seen previous records demolished. They have been the only players to overcome the 38 league goals per season record, previously held by Zarra and Hugo Sánchez. In the 2010-11 season, Cristiano scored 40. Messi promptly responded by scoring 50 goals the following season. Amazing goal scoring achievements by both players and this season alone has already seen Cristiano score 20 times in La Liga and we’re not even in December yet...
