With his three goals against Sevilla in the Camp Nou, Lionel Messi, just 27 years old, has secured a total of 253 league goals and beats the previous record of 251. This record was held by Athletic Club legend, Telmo Zarra since 1955. Messi’s opening goal was from a direct free-kick, the second a pass from Neymar. The third was a precise left foot strike from the edge of the area. After breaking the record the player received the accolades of his team mates and the Barça fans at a packed Nou Camp.
Once the game was over, the video-scoreboard at the Camp Nou offered a selection of Messi’s best goals along with comments from players, back-room staff and the club president. The Barça team stayed on the pitch to watch the video tribute. Messi acknowledged the applause as his teammates made a guard of honour for the Argentine.
Messi was one goal away from equaling the Zarra record coming into the Clásico at the Bernabéu. He didn’t score against Real Madrid or in subsequent games against Celta or Almería.
The Argentine player has now notched 10 goals in the current league campaign along with four in the current edition of the Champions League.
Last season Messi became the highest goal scorer ever in the history of Barça: it was against Osasuna when he equaled and surpasses Paulino Alcántara. He’s now scored 368 goals in 441 games with the Barça shirt.
