To celebrate its 60th anniversary UEFA have published a list of the best 60 goals in all European competitions, and Raúl González Blanco appears twice on it, something only equalled by Marco van Basten and Pavel Nedved. Fans are able to vote for their favourite goals to find Europe’s best ever strike.
Raúl’s first goal on the list is from 2000, and much of the merit for its inclusion is down to the outrageous turn from Fernando Redondo on Manchester United’s Henning Berg, to set up Raúl for Real’s third goal in a famous 3-2 win at the home of the defending UEFA Champions League winners.
The second is the Madrid legend’s moment of magic against Barcelona, in the semi-finals in 2002.
Raúl isn’t the only Spaniard on the list. Barcelona’s Munir is there, thanks to his long, long distance effort in the final of last year’s Youth League, against Benfica. Alcántara’s long distance chip in the final of the Under-21 Championship in 2011 is there too, as is Nayim’s goal against Arsenal in 1995. One David Seaman won’t want to watch again.
Foreigners playing at Spanish clubs are included, with Zidane’s famous goal from the 2002 final at Hampden Park a firm favourite to take the title.
Messi, too, is on the list, for his goal against Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2011, when he went round three players before beating Casillas. And the Barcelona player’s main rival for best player on the planet also features, but not for a goal with his current club: Cristiano’s best strike in European competition according to UEFA is his right foot swerver for Manchester United against Porto in 2009.
