The Cornellà squad arrived in Madrid shortly after a five o’clock yesterday evening after a long six hour coach journey. The media, some fans and Japanese tourists were there to greet them at their Madrid base, the Hotel Catalonia in Atocha. With little time to unpack, the team were whisked off to the Santiago Bernabéu to carry out a training session behind closed doors.
Yesterday, Cornellà began the second installment of their dream. The first part was playing against Madrid at the Power 8 Stadium, home to Espanyol in front of 29.000 spectators, making some 800.000 euro in the process and solving the clubs budgeting situation for the year ahead. The result of the game was somewhat anecdotal apart from a great goal from Óscar Muñoz (1-4).
The party continues today. The players chosen by coach, Jordi Roger will not just have the opportunity to play a competitive game at the Bernabéu; they will take on the most in-form team in European football with 16 straight wins. Being part of this historical series of victories is the second-last part of their cup-tie. The last is a meal at Madrid restaurant, Casa Juan.
Sadly for certain Cornellà players, tonight’s game will see no Casillas, Pepe, Ramos, Marcelo, Kroos, Benzema, Bale or Cristiano. However, there are still plenty of big names to be able to recount anecdotes to their nephews. Madrid are expected to start with a side not dissimilar to the first leg some 34 days ago. It looks like we’ll see, Keylor, Arbeloa, Varane, Nacho, Illarra, Khedira, Isco, James and Chicharito start. Coentrao and youth player Medrán also make Ancelotti’s list. The good news for Madrid fans is the expected return to first team football of Jesé. The Italian coach has confirmed the player will get a run-out in the second half after his long lay-off through injury.
