There would appear to be an apparent difference between the teams that the three Spanish clubs can draw in today’s Champions League draw, which gets under way 1200 today (CET). It's felt, at last on paper, that, Manchester City, Arsenal, Juventus and PSG are stronger opponents than FC Basel, Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke 04 and Shakhtar.
Real Madrid could face any of these four having not coincided with any of these teams in the group stage. Barcelona can’t face PSG nor can Atlético draw Juventus as they played together in their respective group phase. By the same token, Madrid can’t face the Swiss side.
It’s quite feasible; therefore that one of the stronger sides comes up against one of Spain’s representatives, all three being in Pot A of the draw with all three clubs winning their group phase.
In the round of sixteen, sides from the same country can’t be drawn together. Germany has four representatives remaining in the competition whilst Spain and England have three a piece.
The games will be scheduled in staggered form over four separate weeks. The home legs will take place on February, 17, 18, 24 and 25th, with the return legs on March 10, 11, 17 and 18th. The objective for each of the Spanish teams is to survive today’s draw with optimism intact. To this end, better to avoid the likes of City, Arsenal, Juventus and PSG. Just in case.
