David Moyes: "Our energy level has fallen"

What’s your overview on the Basque derby?

We played well in the first half but it’s true that we didn’t maintain that form after the break. It’s a shame as Athletic were down to just 10 men and we could have snatched it at the end.

What’s happened to your team that contributes to this dip after the break?

The energy level dipped off. We need to play with the same intensity for the full 90 minutes, not just 40 or 60 minutes. I told the players that playing as we did in the first half, we would have won the game. At the same time, I saw an improvement from the Villarreal match, were growing together.

Why can’t the team maintain the same physical level during the full game?

We need to become more consistent and correct small mistakes. We need to move the ball with more precision and maintain our intensity. We achieved this in the first period but struggled to do so in the second half. I enjoyed my first derby here but am annoyed with the result as I felt it’s a game that we should have won.

Are you annoyed that Athletic’s goal came from a marking error?

Generally all goals come about due to some sort of error. We played well defensively but there was a lack of picking up players for that goal...

You seemed to be protesting angrily to the linesman during the second half...

No, I wasn’t annoyed with the referee or the linesman, the level of refereeing I thought was good. There are no complaints about the match officials. Today were analyzing the level of play and not the referee, that’s a good thing.

Who did you rate Finnbogason’s game?

He helped the team out well. I saw his drive and that gave focus to the team. I’m convinced he’ll get us goals in the future, but for me the important thing is see him dedicate plenty of work for the benefit of the whole team.
